We provided a statement from the Mayor, Councillor Hanna El Mouallem to Channel 7 regarding flooding in the Head Street, Brighton area folllowing the storm event this week.
We are working to address drainage issues in Head Street including checking and clearing the nearby drain as a matter of urgency.
Following yesterday’s rain event, we believe a blockage further in the drain is contributing to the flooding despite regular drain clearing.
Our crews have invested and will prioritise an upgrade to pipes to significantly increase capacity in coming months.
Council has also allocated $5.6million funding to address localised flooding issues at the western end of Head Street.
We are working with Melbourne Water to finalise a local solution that will work with Melbourne Water’s duplication of the Elwood Main Drain that runs in parallel to Council’s drainage system.
Council cannot undertake its drainage works in the western end of Head Street until the Melbourne Water project is underway.
Council staff met with Melbourne Water today to progress the projects and advocate on behalf of our residents.
