Council has endorsed a submission to Regional Roads Victoria (RRV) for a proposed school crossing site and traffic calming measures to keep students, pedestrians and the wider community safe around school zones.

Following initial safety concerns raised by St Ita’s Primary School, Council has been working closely with the school to investigate options for a school crossing site at Victoria Street, Drouin.

As the proposed site for a school crossing is managed by RRV, Council must assess several factors including traffic volumes, vehicle speeds and the number of children crossing in determining merit for a school crossing.

A survey carried out by the school found that 34 local students living walking distance from the school would walk or ride bikes to and from school if a supervised school crossing were installed along Victoria Street.

With the Shire trending towards a growing population of young families, Council is committed to developing and maintaining liveable communities where residents can reap the social benefits of walking or riding to school.

“Council are proud to support this submission from St Ita’s School to Regional Roads Victoria. With a growing community of young families, our priority is to ensure local facilities and infrastructure respond to this growth. If supported by RRV, this will be a fantastic initiative for St Ita’s Primary School and the wider community”.
