More than a month after Housing Minister Roger Jaensch and the Minority Hodgman Liberal Government promised urgent action on the housing crisis, Tasmanians sleeping rough or struggling to keep a roof over their heads are still waiting.
Shadow Housing Minister Alison Standen said nothing had happened to address the housing crisis since the Liberals called a meeting dubbed an “emergency homelessness summit” on June 14.
“Once again there is just no urgency being applied to this extremely serious situation which is affecting thousands of Tasmanian families,” Ms Standen said.
“With his silence Roger Jaensch is once again showing that housing vulnerable Tasmanians is just not a priority for this government.
“Minister Jaensch promised a work plan but more than five weeks later we still wait.
“Labor welcomes the $5 million investment the Minister has announced, however how the money is spent is critical.
“We need investments that deliver value for money as well as outcomes.
“Tasmanians don’t want more talk or excuses from the Government, they want action before people suffer further during a freezing winter.
“Mr Jaensch needs to urgently tell Tasmanians what immediate measures he is going to take to address the crisis as well as how the government’s pending $450 million in budget cuts will affect the housing budget.”
