As Townsville residents hit the beach to escape the heat, the time has come for stinger nets to return to some of Townsville’s most popular beaches this week with stinger season kicking into gear.
Townsville’s stinger season is from November to May, when there’s an increase in marine stinger activity in the water around Townsville.
Mayor Troy Thompson said the stinger nets help to protect beachgoers from stings during the summer months.
“We know as the north Queensland temps rise people are wanting to take a swim at our beaches to cool down and enjoy the best of what our lifestyle has to offer,” Cr Thompson said.
“It’s why we put the nets out every year during stinger season, so people have the confidence to enjoy places like The Strand and Magnetic Island.
“This week a contractor started installing the nets at The Strand, Balgal Beach, Magnetic Island (Picnic Bay and Horseshoe Bay) and Pallarenda. The installation has taken place over a few days.
Councillor Thompson said lifeguards will also be available at locations like The Strand.
“Living in north Queensland it’s important that we don’t become complacent as stinger nets are not 100 per cent effective at stopping stingers getting through, so it’s important that anyone heading into the water takes the necessary precautions such as wearing a stinger suit,” he said.
“Lifeguards are on duty from 9am everyday if you plan on swimming at The Strand.
“We also urge swimmers to refrain from sitting on, playing near, or interfering with the stinger enclosures, as jellyfish can sometimes wash over the top or through the sides.
“Any swimmers who are stung should immediately notify the lifeguards or lifesavers on duty.
“We encourage anyone visiting Townsville beaches this summer to go to a patrolled location and swim between the red and yellow flags, as well as making sure they are being sun safe when out and about.”
