Stinger nets will be installed at some of Townsville’s most popular beaches from early next week to give people more protection from marine stingers as they escape the heat and swim in the ocean.
Townsville’s stinger season is from November to May, when there’s an increase in marine stinger activity in the water around Townsville.
Mayor Jenny Hill said the stinger nets would help to protect beachgoers from stings during the summer months.
“We know as the mercury rises people are wanting to take a swim at our beaches to cool down and enjoy the best of what our North Queensland lifestyle has to offer,” Cr Hill said.
“It’s why we put the nets out every year during stinger season so people have the confidence to enjoy places like The Strand and Magnetic Island.
“From early next week a contractor will start installing the nets at The Strand, Balgal Beach, Magnetic Island (Picnic Bay and Horseshoe Bay) and Pallarenda.
“The installation will take a few days and once installed we encourage people to swim within the enclosure.”
Cr Hill said lifeguards will also be available at locations like The Strand.
“Stinger nets are not 100 per cent effective at stopping stingers getting through and it’s important that anyone heading into the water takes the necessary precautions such as wearing a stinger suit,” she said.
“Lifeguards are on duty from 9am everyday if you plan on swimming at The Strand.
“We also urge swimmers to refrain from sitting on, playing near, or interfering with the stinger enclosures, as jellyfish can sometimes wash over the top or through the sides.
“Any swimmers who are stung should immediately notify the lifeguards or lifesavers on duty.
“We encourage anyone visiting Townsville beaches this summer to go to a patrolled location and swim between the red and yellow flags.”
