Stir a cuppa for seniors

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15 is fast approaching.

Once again we’re looking to councils, community groups and local organisations to join us in promoting the rights of older people, as a way of preventing elder abuse occurring in our communities.

WEAAD was officially recognised by the United Nations General Assembly in December 2011, following a request by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (INPEA), who

first established the commemoration in June 2006.

This year, WEAAD coincides with a period in time where the social impact from COVID-19 mean that some seniors are at higher risk of experiencing elder abuse due to factors such as social

isolation and changing dynamics in home environments.

How to get involved

It’s easy for anyone to participate in WEAAD.

This year, Seniors Rights Victoria is holding an online Purple Tea event called ‘Stir A Cuppa For Seniors’.

Staff and volunteers will connect virtually over a cuppa, while wearing purple or with something purple prominent in their Zoom frame to acknowledge WEAAD.

It can be purple mugs, purple flowers, a purple teddy bear, anything purple at all!

This event will be shared to social media to promote WEAAD.

We encourage other organisations and members of the community to ‘Stir A Cuppa For Seniors’ and share their photos to social media.
