Strengthening Australia’s commitment to Southeast Asia’s energy transition

Dept of Climate Change, Energy, Environment & Water

Assistant Minister for Climate Change and Energy Josh Wilson will today travel to Vientiane, Laos to represent Australia at the East Asia Summit’s 18th Energy Ministers Meeting.

Assistant Minister Wilson will use his visit to strengthen ties with ASEAN partners and discuss the challenges and opportunities in the region’s energy transition, as well as the economic potential presented by the global transition to net zero.

He will meet with Ministerial counterparts, development partners, and business leaders on the margins of the Energy Ministers Meeting.

Assistant Minister Wilson said:

“This visit will strengthen Australian and ASEAN cooperation on the clean energy transition and demonstrate Australia’s continuing commitment to the region.

“Sharing the benefits of the clean energy transition with our Southeast Asian neighbours is crucial for advancing the net zero transformation in both Australia and the region.

“Working with Southeast Asian partners to develop clean energy supply chains will increase two-way green trade and investment.

“I look forward to engaging with our ASEAN Ministerial counterparts, development partners, and regional business leaders in the work of maximising these opportunities and securing our energy future.”

This two-day visit follows the 2024 ASEAN-Australia Special Summit hosted by the Prime Minister in March.
