Strengthening climate change and environment collaboration with China

Minister for Climate Change and Energy, Chris Bowen, hosted China’s Minister for Ecology and Environment, Huang Runqiu for the 8th Australia-China Ministerial Dialogue on Climate Change.

Held in Sydney on 29 August 2024, the dialogue was an important opportunity to build on our long history of climate change cooperation.

The dialogue delivered on commitments made by Prime Minister Albanese and Chinese Premier Li Qiang during their meetings in November 2023 and June 2024 to continue or expand engagement in climate change, energy and environment.

Under the , which was signed by both countries earlier this year, Ministers discussed respective domestic climate change policies, cooperation in multilateral forums, and future bilateral engagement.

While in Australia, Minister Huang Runqiu also met with Minister for the Environment and Water, Tanya Plibersek. Both countries reaffirmed the importance of cooperating to address shared environmental challenges.

Climate change and environment challenges are global issues requiring a global response. Cooperating with partners like China ensures we are taking meaningful action to address climate change and achieve a nature positive world.
