Strengthening international relations

Toowoomba Regional Council will continue to strengthen international ties following endorsement of a new International Relations Strategy.

Mayor Paul Antonio said the strategy would provide Council and the community with greater clarity around Council’s objectives related to international relationships.

“International relations are so important for the Toowoomba Region,” Mayor Antonio said.

“Council has a strategic approach to how and why it engages with international cities and this new document will ensure we are well-positioned moving forward.

“The strategy is designed to enhance the quality of life of the Region’s residents, increase opportunities for local businesses that contribute to regional prosperity and improve the knowledge of the Region.”

The strategy includes an action plan which focus on four key outcomes:

  • Liveable Region – will focus on the quality of life of the Region’s communities through engagement with global partners;
  • Prosperous Region – will focus on business opportunities through linkages with international markets, partners and investors;
  • Knowledgeable Region – will provide opportunities to share with and learn from our partner cities to improve the way our communities are serviced; and
  • Effective Program – the effective program management principles.

“Council currently maintains formal relationships with Whanganui in New Zealand, Takatsuki in Japan, Paju in South Korea and Yuecheng District, Shaoxing in China,” Mayor Antonio said.

“These relationships have been established over the past 38 years and have benefited the Region through their promotion of cultural understandings and their contribution to the economy.

“As part of the strategy we will continue to focus on increasing economic outcomes from Council’s international relationships, whilst continuing to support traditional cultural activities.

“Achieving greater economic outcomes will require Council to work more closely with regional exporters, industry support organisations and government agencies. This approach adds greater value to Council’s participation in international visits by maximising collaboration opportunities.”

The adoption of the new strategy replaces the original strategy which was adopted in May 2013.
