Two men have been charged as part of an ongoing investigation into the supply of prohibited drugs across the state’s north.
In August this year, officers attached to Central North Police District established Strike Force Elwick to investigate the supply of prohibited drugs to Walgett and surrounding areas.
Following extensive inquiries, strike force investigators executed two search warrants at homes at Walgett from 7am yesterday (Thursday 11 November 2021).
During the searches, officers seized electronic devices, a motorcycle, methylamphetamine (ice) and cannabis. All items will undergo further examination.
A 33-year-old man was arrested and taken to Walgett Police Station, where he was charged with several offences including;
- Supply prohibited drugs on an ongoing basis (x2),
- supply prohibited drug,
- knowingly deal with proceeds of crime (x2),
- knowingly/recklessly direct criminal group assist crime,
- organises/conducts drug premises expose child, and
- threaten to destroy/damage other persons property.
He appeared at Walgett Local Court yesterday (Thursday 11 November 2021), where he was formally refused bail to reappear at Walgett Local Court on Tuesday 23 November 2021.
A short time later, officers arrested a 39-year-old man at Peel Street, Walgett, where they seized his mobile phone and more than $7000 cash.
The man was also taken to Walgett Police Station and charged with two counts of supply prohibited drug and participate criminal group contribute criminal activity.
He was granted strict conditional bail to appear at Walgett Local Court on Tuesday 23 November 2021.
Central North Police District Commander, Acting Superintendent Trent Swinton, said yesterday’s arrests are the result of four months of investigations undertaken by officers at Walgett.
“This investigation shows the community that those individuals or groups who wish to undertake unlawful activities will be identified and investigated,” A/Supt Swinton said.
“I acknowledge the diligent work and dedication of Strike Force Elwick investigators, who continue to keep our community safe.”
Investigations are ongoing.
