Strike Force Vulcan officers have charged a 35-year-old man as a result of their investigation into a series of scrub fires that occurred in Hamersley and Balcatta on 25 January 2024.
It will be alleged between 8pm and 8.30pm, the man set fire to bushland as he rode his bicycle along the bike path beside Reid Highway, between Erindale and Wanneroo Roads. It is further alleged he set fire to bushland on Wanneroo Road in Balcatta near the Water Corp facility.
Department of Fire and Emergency Services personnel attended and extinguished the fires before they could impact on homes.
Strike Force Vulcan officers arrested the 35-year-old Balcatta man on Wednesday, 7 February 2024 and he is due to appear before the Perth Magistrates Court on 28 February 2024 charged with:
• Six counts of Wilfully light or cause to be lit a fire likely to injure or damage.
This offence carries a maximum penalty of 20 years’ imprisonment.
