Striking a Musical Note with Books

What would a movie be without music? Music sets the mood, guides our emotions and evokes memories of a favourite film or scene.

Recognising that libraries are about “more than just books”, The Friends of Wollongong City Libraries are presenting Book to Baton 2, a celebration of great films based on popular books, and their soundtracks.

It’s the second time The Friends and Wollongong City Libraries have collaborated on the musical literary event.

Book to Baton 2 features the Sydney Concert Orchestra, under the direction of Dr Steve Watson, presenting music from Pirates of the Caribbean, Wonder Woman, Dr Zhivago, ET, Somewhere in Time, The Magnificent Seven, and much more at the Illawarra Performing Arts Centre.

Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM encouraged book and music lovers to reserve their tickets for this popular event.

“Our Libraries continue to offer a great range of events and activities to cater for all interests in our community and this is just one more example of how open and inclusive our libraries are,” Cr Bradbery said.

“Words on a page, images on the screen, music to the ear. Together they can be a wonderful combination and I’m excited to see this concert return with an interesting range of new film themes.

“This is going to be a wonderful concert that celebrates the impact that books, film and music have in our lives. Make sure you get your tickets early so you don’t miss out!”

Friends of Wollongong City Libraries President Jane Pretty said the volunteers were excited to be hosting Book to Baton II.

“We are really excited to be hosting this event once again. Dr Steve Watson and his orchestra are sure to amaze with a wonderful afternoon of magical music and we encourage you to come along and enjoy it with us,” she said.
