Griffith City Council wishes to advise construction of footpaths in Yoogali, Hanwood, Yenda and Griffith have now been completed. The footpaths were constructed through the support of New South Wales Government’s Stronger Country Communities funding program. The footpaths constructed include;
Yoogali
- Gorton Street – between Henderson Oval and Edon Street
- Moura Street – between Hebden Street and East Street
- Hebden Street – between Edon Street and Moura Street
- East Street – between Edon Street and Moura Street
Hanwood
- Yarran Street – from Hanwood Sports Oval, through Restyn Park to School Street
- School Street – between the Children’s crossing and Hanwood Road
- Hanwood Road – between School Street to the Children’s crossing
Yenda
- West Avenue – between Park Street and Cyril Morris Park
- Park Street – between West Avenue and the Yenda Retirement Village
- East Avenue – between Yenda Place and Mirrool Avenue
- Short Street – between South Avenue and Bingar Street
- War Memorial Park – Through War Memorial Park linking up to the existing path network
Griffith
- Railway Street – between Tranter Place and the existing footpath
- Warrambool Street – between Animoo Avenue and Noorebar Avenue
Griffith City Council will also construct a footpath along Willandra Avenue between Coolah Street and Merrigal Street in the coming months as part of the remaining allocated funding.
The new pedestrian infrastructure totalling 2560 metres in length, will improve the safety of pedestrians around these areas and benefit residents including children who walk to and from school along these routes. It is advised that all pedestrians use the footpaths in accordance with the road rules and give-way to vehicular traffic when crossing lane ways and intersecting roads.
Mayor John Dal Broi said he was pleased to see so many new footpaths available for use across the Local Government Area.
“Increasing the amount of pedestrian and bicycle access can make a significant contribution to achieving a better quality of life and environment for our community,” Cr Dal Broi said.
“These footpaths mean we are a step closer to becoming a fully accessible community with high quality pedestrian and bicycle facilities that encourage walking and cycling as legitimate and sustainable modes of transport in and around the City. I’d like to congratulate all those who worked on this project.”
Chair of the Transport Committee, Simon Croce said, it was good to see the footpaths already being put to full use.
“I know that residents in the villages are particularly grateful for these new paths which make getting around easier,” Cr Croce said.
Providing the pedestrian infrastructure has contributed to fulfilling part of Griffith City Council’s Pedestrian and Bicycle Strategy.
