Over 6,000 students from around 165 schools are taking part in the Tasmanian Schools Triathlon Challenge held over four days in Devonport and Hobart.
The Challenge features individual and team events for primary and secondary students from both state and independent schools.
Minister for Sport and Recreation, Nic Street was pleased to attend and open the Hobart Challenge for Secondary Schools at Bellerive Beach, with over 650 students taking part.
“The Challenge is a great opportunity to promote an active and healthy lifestyle to students and provides encouragement to get involved in physical activity,” Minister Street said.
“It also allows students to undertake an achievable personal challenge while spending time outdoors with their friends and enjoying sport.
“Getting involved in physical activity early puts in place the building blocks for a healthy and active life – so I am pleased to see so many young Tasmanians involved.”
The Devonport event was held on the 23rd and 24th of November and the Hobart primary school event will be held tomorrow.
There are approximately 4,800 primary aged and 1,250 secondary school participants taking part in the Challenge, which is the highest participation rate in the event’s fifteen-year history.
Supporting events, programs and access to sports facilities that encourage participation in sport is important to the wellbeing of children and young people.
Minister Street said he looks forward to seeing the Schools Triathlon Challenge continue and working further with the community and sporting organisations to ensure there are growing opportunities for young people to participate in sport and physical activity.
