This week 22 young Tasmanians are spending their school holidays at the police academy, getting a first-hand look at the life of a police recruit.
Tasmania Police’s Career Development Program is aimed at Year 12 students from around Tasmania who have a keen interest in becoming a police officer.
During the free, four-day program students stay at the police academy and complete a range of training modules before completing fitness and job suitability testing.
Senior Constable Ruth Purcell from Recruiting Services said this week’s course had eight young men and 14 young women from 14 different schools participating.
“While they have a lot of fun, the students are being challenged and pushed beyond their everyday comfort zones,” she said.
“Throughout the week we emphasise the importance of teamwork and working together to help each other through.”
“We know that policing is an excellent career option, and we often say that it’s one job, with many opportunities because you can do so many different things.”
“This week the students have been given a glimpse of a range of policing areas including forensics and operational skills and in the coming days they’ll do even more, with defensive driving and scenario-based training taking place later this week.”
