Stunning acts spread their unique brands of folk, pop, stomp, rock and soul

A bumper program of sensational free live concerts will bring a feast of music and merriment to Stonnington’s beautiful parks and gardens this January.

City of Stonnington Mayor Cr Steve Stefanopoulos said the annual free concert series is a great opportunity to see some of Australia’s best emerging talent and established performers, while celebrating summer in our City.

“We invite you to enjoy the music and sunshine in our sensational parks and gardens. Bring your friends, family and a picnic basket for some excellent summer afternoon entertainment,” Mayor Stefanopoulos said.

The series opens on Sunday 5 January with Billy Davis & the Good Lords, a group bound to win themselves some new fans with their unique blend of hip hop and RnB. Their upbeat and positive sound is sure to get you up off your feet, sending good vibrations through Victoria Gardens. Support will come from jazz singer/songwriter Tanya George and her band, delivering fresh sounds of soul, jazz and pop for audiences to soak up in the sunshine.

Central Park in Malvern East will come alive on Sunday 12 January when The Northern Folk and Rach Brennan & The Pines hit the stage. Albury-born and Melbourne-based, The Northern Folk are a charismatic collective of powerful vocalists, horns, bass and percussion. Their sound is in a league of its own – a foot-stomping blend of pop, roots, rock and folk that’s addictive and full of energy. They’ll be supported by Rach Brennan & The Pines, a group of singers and instrumentalists who’ll bring lively, singalong roots/pop and perform some of their signature tunes from their latest album.

The sun will set on the concert series on Sunday 19 January with Emma Donovan and Laneous performing at Malvern Gardens. Indigenous Australian singer/songwriter Emma Donovan, a member of the acclaimed musical Donovan family, will take the crowd on a journey through reggae, jazz and roots with her distinctly husky voice. Her sound will merge perfectly with that of her support act Laneous – a self-taught musician, guitarist and vocalist with a soulful, silky voice and unique style.

Concert-goers can replenish their dancing energy with a range of delicious refreshments from fish & chips, healthy wraps, cheese platters to gelato and iced tea – all served from the food trucks within in the parks.

PBS DJ’s will be spinning some tunes and warming up the crowd from 5pm at each event, before the bands and artists kick off their performances and raise the (figurative) roof. Let the 2020 Sunset Sounds series in Stonnington begin!
