Projects that will help reduce the rate of suicide among South Australians will be supported through the Suicide Prevention Community Grants, which are now open.
The grants, which have been running since 2014, are supporting communities across South Australia to take evidence-based action known to promote positive mental health and wellbeing.
Total grant funding of $200,000 is available, consisting of two categories of individual grants, the first providing funding up to $5,000 to support delivery of smaller suicide prevention projects, and the second up to $15,000 for larger initiatives.
The grants will be used to create a greater awareness, reduce stigma and build protective factors in South Australian communities through support, training and events held by the various organisations.
This is in addition to the continued work in the space of suicide prevention, alongside the Suicide Prevention Council and 45 Suicide Prevention Networks in SA.
Organisations which have been awarded grant funding in previous years include:
*Talk Out Loud – Providing mental health first aid training to teenagers
*Stamp Out Suicide – Encouraging people coming together in a community to raise suicide awareness
*Queer Minds Matter – Workshops to meet new people and strengthen support networks
Applications are now open through to November 3, and will be assessed by Wellbeing SA.

As put by Nadia Clancy
Suicide has a ripple effect on communities, impacting friends, families, schools, workplaces, and neighbourhoods.
We all have a role in preventing suicide, and the Suicide Prevention Grants help non-government organisations and groups to implement local suicide prevention projects across regional and metropolitan areas.
Through raising awareness and breaking down stigma surrounding suicide, we can help save lives across the state.
As put by Wellbeing SA Executive Director of Mental Health and Wellbeing, Nicole Keller
Wellbeing SA is proud to be involved in the Suicide Prevention Grants, helping empowering communities to strengthen their wellbeing and resilience, and equip them to better respond to and reduce suicide and suicide related distress.
The grants have been integral in shining a light on the important, positive ways communities can identify local issues and solutions, build connections and provide vital support when needed.
Since being introduced in 2014, the grants have funded a wide variety of projects including local community awareness campaigns, culturally informed events, targeted resource development, therapeutic art-based initiatives and sporting activities, all with the overall goal of reducing suicide.
