Summer safety a priority for police

Police are reminding the community to enjoy themselves responsibly across Port Phillip Bay this week as the weather heats up.

There will be a highly visible police presence proactively patrolling the beaches to ensure that everyone is safely enjoying the warm weather in the lead up to Christmas.

As part of Operation Summersafe, general duties police will be supported by specialist state-based resources incuding the Public Order Response Team, Mounted Branch, Water Police, Drone Unit and Dog Squad,

Superintendent Sharon McKinnon said this week will be one of the busiest times of the year, particularly at Chelsea and Mordialloc beaches, with large numbers of people expected to flock to these locations.

“We know there will be a lot of people heading out to celebrate Christmas parties this week, as well as work and school break ups,” Supt McKinnon said.

“As always, police encourage people to come out and enjoy all the beaches, cafes and restaurants the Chelsea and Mordialloc areas have to offer.

“However, we are asking everyone to be mindful of how their behaviour affects the rest of the community.

“With thousands of people visiting our popular beach locations every day, we want to reassure the community that only a very small number of people choose to do the wrong thing.

“Unfortunately last week we saw some people act in a way that was unlawful, disruptive and concerning to the rest of the community.

“We want to be very clear that police will not tolerate any form of anti-social or disruptive behaviour.

“If you choose to cause trouble, police will hold you accountable for your actions and arrest you.

“We’ll be working hard to keep you safe, but it must not be forgotten that everyone has an individual responsibility to ensure a safe and enjoyable summer for all.”

Operation Summersafe will run from Williamstown to the Mornington Peninsula until March 2020.
