Hume City Council and the Victorian Government’s commitment to provide more commuter car parking at Sunbury station is another step closer with the recent unveiling of the Sunbury Multi-Deck Car Park sign.
The milestone follows earlier planning approval for the project that will make it easier and more accessible for locals to catch the train.
A request for tender has been issued, seeking bids from shortlisted construction contractors before works begin in 2023.
The new multi-deck car park will be delivered by Hume City Council and will be jointly funded with support from the Victorian Government’s Car Parks for Commuters Program, the Victorian Growth Areas Infrastructure Contribution, the Australian Government’s Urban Congestion Fund and Hume City Council.
The new multideck car park will deliver an additional 300 parking spaces for commuters. The expansion will build on the car parks currently available for commuters across the Sunbury Station precinct, with demand at the station increasing across Sunbury’s growing community.
The new multi-deck car parking area will feature accessible parking for people with disability, enhanced lighting and improved signage within the precinct.
The car park will not only make it easier for commuters catching the train – it will also alleviate pressure on neighbouring streets which are often used for parking by commuters, shoppers and shop tenants.
The project will maintain parking for shoppers and traders as well as support future development in the precinct that will generate additional jobs and employment opportunities in the thriving Sunbury Town Centre.
It will be built in central Sunbury on the corner of Station Street and Evans Street.
Since 2014, 14,000 new and upgraded parking spaces have been delivered at stations across the state, and the Victorian Government is on track to deliver an additional 7,000 spaces.
Victoria’s Big Build is continuing to deliver upgrades in Sunbury which will reduce travel times, improve safety and create better local connections for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists.
Works are continuing on the Gap Road Level Crossing Removal Project and the Sunbury Line Upgrade, which will enable bigger, more comfortable trains and more frequent services on the line when the Metro Tunnel opens in 2025.
While the Sunbury Road Upgrade is delivering safety and capacity improvements which are vital to keeping the town moving and catering to future growth.
