The second stage of a multi-million dollar upgrade for one of the Sunshine Coast’s most popular bike routes is just around the corner.
The Palaszczuk Government has started design on stage two of the David Low Way bicycle lanes, creating dedicated on-road bike lanes through to Airport Drive.
It follows the first lot of works from Keith Royal Drive to Mudjimba Esplanade.
Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said once complete, stage two would add to more than $15 million in bicycle infrastructure on the Sunshine Coast between Bli Bli and Peregian Beach.
“Being in such a scenic part of the south east, David Low Way has become one of the coast’s most popular destinations for a weekend ride,” Mr Bailey said.
“The project will feature 1.5m-wide lanes so bike riders can keep active, ride safely and enjoy what makes this place so famous.
“It’s part of the Palaszczuk Government $219 million commitment for dedicated bike infrastructure right across Queensland over the next four years.”
Mr Bailey said a new pedestrian refuge would also be installed at the intersection of Mudjimba Esplanade and David Low Way to make it safer for visitors and locals wanting to walk between the beach and other amenities.
Transport and Main Roads will begin engaging with stakeholders and residents on the design in coming months.
Design is expected to be complete later this year with construction to begin in early 2020.
