Sunshine Coast plans to pick up for Clean Up Australia Day

With Clean Up Australia Day fast approaching, there are already 83 sites registered on the Sunshine Coast for the nation-wide event on Sunday March 3.

Local residents, community groups, schools and businesses are preparing to roll up their sleeves for the annual clean-up event, and they’re keen for more volunteers to lend a hand.

Environment Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay encouraged all residents to take part on the day, which has been supported by local schools and community groups since 1990, reinforcing Sunshine Coast Council’s vision to be Australia’s most sustainable region – healthy, smart, creative.

“Last year we recorded our biggest year for Clean Up Australia Day activities since 2010, with almost 1500 volunteers taking part in clean-up activities across 98 sites in the region,” Cr McKay said.

“I encourage everyone to get together friends and family to register with Clean Up Australia Day. Plan to pick up litter in your favourite areas, from the hinterland to the beaches, along our creeks or walking tracks.

“For those community members already registered and for those who actively pick up rubbish as part of their regular walking routine, I sincerely thank them for helping keep our Sunshine Coast clean and healthy.”

Division 3 Councillor Peter Cox has participated in the annual clean-up over the past seven years and said he’s familiar with the commonly collected items.

“Each year, plastic is the number one type of rubbish collected across our region and state,” Cr Cox said.

“We also regularly see cigarette butts, confectionery sticks, coffee cups, bottles and cans.

“It is a strong reminder to all residents and visitors to be responsible when disposing of rubbish, including recyclables.

“Council has taken a great step in reducing single-use plastics at council-run events and facilities, and we encourage other businesses and organisations to take similar actions.”
