Queenslanders and families in need of extra help over the festive season will be able to access Emergency Relief support such as food vouchers and third-party payments, thanks to ongoing Palaszczuk Government funding.
Eighty-three Emergency Relief services will have their funding renewed for a further 3 years from 1 January 2020 to 31 December 2022, totalling $5.26 million.
Minister for Communities Coralee O’Rourke said 100% of this funding was distributed to Queenslanders in need.
“Emergency Relief providers distribute cash, food vouchers, food parcels and third-party payments to families and individuals in immediate financial crisis,” Mrs O’Rourke said.
“A number of circumstances can lead people to seek emergency relief – losing a job, unexpected bills or personal crisis getting back on your feet after a natural disaster.
“When these unexpected events occur, we want people to know that assistance is available.
“Anyone who is struggling, is encouraged to reach out and access that help.”
Emergency Relief organisations in Queensland include neighbourhood and community centres, church groups, emergency accommodation providers, women’s centres and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Health Services.
Mrs O’Rourke said people seeking emergency relief are often connected with other services such as financial counselling, generalist counselling or housing support.
“We also fund financial counselling services which are available to anyone experiencing financial difficulties,” she said.
“These services, which have an early intervention focus, assist people to address their financial problems before they reach crisis point.
“They also assist those with complex financial problems to find a solution.
“Funding for Emergency Relief services and financial counselling is another example of the Palaszczuk Government’s commitment to creating thriving communities where Queenslanders, regardless of their personal circumstances, are able to participate and be included in their communities, be resilient and enjoy social and economic wellbeing.”
