A partnership between Council and the St Patrick’s Race Club is set to come into effect with the staging of this month’s big race meeting.
Council and the Race Club have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) which will see Council support the next three St Pats events.
Under the MOU Council will provide $10,000 of in-kind support each year including waste services, a water truck for track maintenance and preparation, traffic management, and road grading.
Council will also kick in $30,000 to provide temporary mobile phone infrastructure on the day to improve connectivity for race day patrons and bookmakers.
Mayor Tom Kennedy said Council was proud to continue its long-standing support of the city’s biggest race meeting.
“St Pats provides a great day out for locals and is a boon for our economy, with thousands travelling to the city to enjoy a big afternoon of racing,” he said.
“We’re more than happy to play our part in delivering the event and supporting the amazing committee who bring St Pats to life every year.”
The support from Council has been gratefully accepted by the race club.
“We need support from all sectors of the community both financial and in-kind, ” said St Pats executive member Marc Coulter.
“The Telstra tower is a huge bonus as without connectivity we do not have an event.”
The race club and council are liaising to look at a long-term solution for the racecourse.
“We have a great relationship with the Council and I’m sure moving forward this will only benefit St Pats and the Broken Hill community,” Mr Coulter said.
St Pats will be held at the Racecourse on March 16. Tickets and memberships are available at the Club’s office at 400A Argent Street (between The BHP and The SC Workingman’s Club).
