Monash University supports the basic freedoms and human rights of all scholars and students, irrespective of gender, sexuality, ethnicity, race and religion.
We condemn the violent treatment, imprisonment and killing of civilians who have been protesting the death of Mahsa Amini, the young woman who died while in the custody of Iran’s moral police. We recall that Iran is a signatory of the international covenants on economic, social and cultural rights, and civil and political rights, and that it is accountable for upholding the basic rights covered in these United Nations covenants, including the rights to bodily integrity, to freedom of expression and association.
Monash University offers its support to students, staff, alumni and the wider community affected by the widespread protests unfolding in Iran in support of women’s human rights. In particular, we acknowledge and appreciate the fears and concerns of our students and staff from Iran and those with family and friends in the country. We are deeply concerned for the safety and security of women in Iran and for the human rights of Iranian citizens.
