Supporting Culture: Barunga Festival Artists Announced and New Funding Agreement

Barunga Festival turns 35 this year and the Territory Labor Government has continued its support of the popular event with a new two-year funding agreement to recognise and promote Aboriginal sport, music and culture in the Katherine region.

The three-day festival runs from 5-7 June and attracts thousands of Territorians and interstate visitors each year. This year’s theme is ‘Family’, highlighting the nature and feel of the festival.

Early confirmed artists include legendary blues singer and Walmatjarri woman, Kankawa Nagarra (Olive Knight) from Fitzroy Crossing in WA, Bad Dreems and Numbalwar’s Mambali Band. Australia’s favourite children’s performer, Justine Clarke is returning for her fifth consecutive year.

Each year people of all ages pile into the small community of Barunga, located approximately 80km south of Katherine, to enjoy the event, which boasts a Healthy Lifestyle and Food policy – Barunga is alcohol and smoke-free, and sugary drinks and junk food are discouraged.

More acts will be announced by the organiser, Skinnyfish Music in due course. Tickets cost $50 for adults, $15 for children aged 12-17 and $5 for ages 2-11. Children under 2 are free.
