Supporting Further Growth and Development in Katherine

NT Government

To support the further growth and development of Katherine East, the Territory Labor Government is duplicating the Stuart Highway in that area.

Works are already underway with local business BMD extending and duplicating the Stuart Highway 200 metres before Cyprus Road to 300 metres past Uralla Road.

The duplication will enhance safety for road users, increase flood immunity and support the creation of development parcels as part of the Supporting Growth in Katherine East project.

In addition to the duplication, a new link road intersection positioned between Cyprus Street and Uralla Road will be constructed, Uralla Road intersection will be realigned and safety upgrades applied to the Cyprus Street intersection.

The upgrades will see the existing two-lane highway upgraded to four-lanes, extending the existing duplication from the Katherine CBD southbound.

Stormwater, sewer and electrical upgrades will be undertaken as part of the works to prepare for the second component of the Supporting Growth in Katherine East project.

These upgrades complement the $10 million flood mitigation works which will take place in Katherine North this year.

Construction on the duplication is expected to be completed by late 2022.

This project is being jointly delivered with the Australian Government to improve road safety outcomes for Territorians.

Quotes from Minister for Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics, Eva Lawler:

“Our Government will continue to invest in quality infrastructure for the benefit of our community.

“In February we released the Infrastructure Commission’s Blueprint – which stated that infrastructure should support the social and economic opportunities of our regions – this is what this Stuart Highway duplication project will achieve.

“These upgrades will enhance safety for road users and improve flood protection in Katherine East, while also supporting the development of parcels in the Supporting Growth in Katherine East project.”
