Supporting Local Climate Adaptation

The Australian Government is supporting a First Nations-led response to the on-ground impacts of climate change in the Torres Strait and Northern Peninsula Area.

This region is vulnerable to climate change and facing impacts such as sea level rise, heatwaves, drought and extreme rainfall.

Select local organisations can now to recruit local First Nations climate resilience officers. Grants can also support climate change education and response for the region.

Recipients will deliver the adaptation actions that are needed for that area. This might include:

  • community education on climate change science
  • protecting cultural values being impacted by climate change
  • collecting local knowledge on climate
  • developing regional climate adaptation solutions.

The $10.8 million grant program is an important component of achieving the goals of the Torres Strait and Northern Peninsula Area Climate Resilience Centre.

We are working with regional leaders and Traditional Owners to design, establish and deliver . A $15.9 million investment over 6 years to 2027-28, it will create a coordinated regional response to climate change, led by First Nations people.
