Community members are invited to provide input into the Central Goldfields Positive Ageing Strategy 2021-2026, which aims to identify how Council will deliver services that support our older residents to age healthily, feel connected and enjoy an age-friendly community.
Central Goldfields Shire Mayor Cr Chris Meddows-Taylor said the development of the Positive Ageing Strategy builds on Council’s commitment to better meet the needs and aspirations of the Central Goldfields growing older population.
“Central Goldfields has long been an attractive place for older people to live and retire, with 28.2 percent of the region’s population aged 65 years and above.
“With the number of residents aged over 65 expected to increase by almost 9.2 per cent by 2036, it’s vital that we ensure that our services, programs and infrastructure reflect the evolving needs of this population.
“The community engagement process aims to capture resident aspirations and expectations, as well as provide the opportunity for us to undertake research and consultation with other key services providers across the Shire.
“There are many areas where Council can play a key role in positive ageing, from providing options for older people to connect, learn, mentor, exercise and have fun to making Council services and facilities more accessible and providing information to older people about what is on in their community, how they can get involved and how to get support.”
Central Goldfields Shire General Manager Community Wellbeing, Martin Collins said Council’s is committed to ensuring our older residents have a say in how they want to live active, healthy and independent lives.
“Older people play a vital role in our community and it is important to recognise and respect the significant contribution they make to our vibrant region as workers, volunteers, neighbours, friends, parents and grandparents.
“We want to hear from our community about how we can enhance participation, improve quality of life and provide support to older residents so that they can continue to participate in and contribute to community life as they grow older.”
