The Victorian Government is aiming to increase the representation of women councillors and mayors. The Women Leading Locally Fellowships program will support 125 women from 31 target municipalities – with Swan Hill being one of the 31 – to stand for local government elections.
Swan Hill Rural City Council’s Mayor, Cr Les McPhee urges anyone who has contemplated the idea of standing as a Councillor to get involved.
“It’s a great opportunity for local women to gain valuable training and mentoring, to boost their chances of becoming elected.
“The program welcomes the involvement of women from all ages and backgrounds – young women, first nations women, women who live with disability, women from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds and LGBTQI+ women.
“Lead by skilled facilitators, it is designed to inspire, equip and sustain women to become – and remain – successful local representatives for their communities,” Cr McPhee said.
Cr McPhee said the key requirement for applicants, as with being a councillor, is that you have a passion for your local community, like we do.
