Congratulations to Tamara Jago SC who has been officially sworn in as a Supreme Court Judge this morning at Government House and then a ceremonial sitting of the Supreme Court of Tasmania.
Justice Jago’s appointment delivers on our promise to appoint a seventh Judge to the Supreme Court, for the first time since 1995.
As Attorney-General, I am committed to delivering a more efficient and effective justice system for all Tasmanians, and this historic appointment will assist in reducing criminal court backlogs and provide better access to justice for all Tasmanians, especially in the North West where Justice Jago will be predominantly based.
Justice Jago was born and raised in Tasmania, and brings extensive knowledge and experience to this important role having worked on some of Tasmania’s most difficult and complex criminal trials and appeals, in addition to mentoring and supporting many young lawyers.
She has also been a trailblazer in the legal profession, holding the distinction of being the first woman to be appointed a Senior Counsel, before being appointed as a Magistrate in 2016.
Pleasingly, for the first time, Justice Jago will be stationed in Burnie but will also regularly travel to Hobart and Launceston – improving access to justice for Tasmanians statewide, but especially on the North West Coast.
I look forward to the significant contribution that Justice Jago will make to the Supreme Court and to our justice system.
