Swinburne University of Technology has risen to number 142 in the world in the .
Swinburne’s debut in the top 150 represents a leap of 57 places for the university, up from 199 in 2022-23. The achievement positions Swinburne as third in Victoria, and tenth in Australia.
The latest ranking continues Swinburne’s steady climb in world university rankings, including in the Times Higher Education Young University Rankings 2024 and a result in the 2024 Times Higher Education World University Rankings.
The US News Best Global Universities Ranking also assesses universities in more than 50 subject areas, with Swinburne placing in the global Top 50 for Electrical and Electronic Engineering (#24) and Space Science (#50).
The achievement in Space Science follows Swinburne’s recent win at the Australian Space Awards 2024.
Among Swinburne’s global Top 100 subjects were Engineering (#59), Artificial Intelligence (#61), Civil Engineering (#61), Computer Science (#73), Economics and Business (#74) and Optics (#85); and in the Top 150 for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (#106) and Physical Chemistry (#140).
Swinburne’s Top 200 subjects Green and Sustainable Science (#151), Materials Science (#159) and Energy and Fuels (#167) spoke to Swinburne’s credentials in sustainability-focused research areas, such as , , , and .
Swinburne’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research, Professor Karen Hapgood, said the latest ranking affirms Swinburne’s reputation for research excellence on the global stage.
“As a university defined and inspired by technology and innovation, Swinburne’s new top 150 rankings result strengthens our position as a world leader,” Professor Hapgood said.
“Every day, our researchers are producing innovative solutions to real-world problems and amplifying our strong reputation for excellent, high quality and impactful research. While we’re , we’re also proud to be recognised as among the best in the world.
“The latest result underscores our global stature in tech-rich fields like space and aerospace, engineering and AI, alongside our expertise in business and economics.”
Driving the rise in Swinburne’s overall global ranking were high scores for research reputation and citations metrics. Swinburne performed strongly against regional research reputation, as well as percentage of total publications among the 10 per cent most cited, and percentage of highly cited papers among the top 1 per cent most cited.
