Police are encouraging participants of the Sydney Marathon to plan ahead by dropping off their gear and collecting their race kit ahead of this weekend’s event.
Event organisers are expecting large crowds around Alexandria from today (Thursday 14 September 2023), through to Saturday (16 September 2023), as participants prepare for the race at the Sydney Marathon Running Show presented by ASICS.
Approximately 42,000 people are registered to take part in the festival this Sunday (17 September 2022), so participants are encouraged to attend the show early or expect delays.
A high-visibility police operation will be in place this weekend to ensure the safety and security of all participants, event staff and the wider community.
Operation Commander, Acting Superintendent Samuel Nelson, has urged participants to take this opportunity to plan ahead and visit the show to ensure you’re organised ahead of race day.
“With tens of thousands of people registered for the Sydney Marathon, we are expecting large crowds to make their way to Alexandria over the next four days,” A/Supt Nelson said.
“To avoid any last-minute stress, our best advice for participants to arrive at the show early, so you can pick-up your event kit and drop off your finish-line belongings.
“If you’re unable to attend the show, you can get a friend or family member with your race information to attend on your behalf.”
Runners are encouraged to plan their trip to the show and Sunday’s race by taking advantage of the many public transport services available.
“On race day, you should prepare for delays and plan by leaving the car at home and utilising public transport – additional services will be in place on the day,” A/Supt Nelson said.
