It’s not often you get to meet some of the world’s best names in cricket but this Friday, the people of Perth get to do exactly that when the England and Afghanistan cricket teams come to the City as part of the biggest global sporting event held in Australia.
The opening night of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Perth takes place at Optus Stadium on Saturday 22 October, with world number one England taking on Afghanistan.
To give both teams a proper Perth welcome, the City is hosting a special free event at Forrest Place on Friday 21 October from midday to 1:30pm.
City of Perth Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas said cricket fans are encouraged to come and meet some of the players and even get a chance to grill the teams in a live Q & A session.
“Cricket is such a popular sport in WA and we’re looking forward to giving everyone the opportunity to be a part of all the action,” Mr Zempilas said.
“There will also be a chance to win a double pass to Saturday’s match so come down to Forrest Place, wear your team colours and join us for a celebration of international sport.”
The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup will be held from 16 October – 13 November, with Optus Stadium hosting five Super 12 matches across four days, including one double-header.
Friday’s Q & A session will feature members of the England and Afghanistan team.
“After you’ve had your cricket fix, make sure you stay on to enjoy all that our City has to offer including the Twilight Hawkers Markets which kicks off 4:30pm,” Mr Zempilas said.
