A new accessible walkway and platform overlooking one of Port Macquarie’s most iconic views has now opened at Tacking Point Lighthouse.
The provision of this brand-new accessible infrastructure will support a more inclusive cross section of the community and provide a major boost for tourism – enabling people of all abilities to enjoy the breathtaking vistas at the northern end of Lighthouse Beach.
The project was proudly funded $750,000 from the NSW Government and $450,000 from Port Macquarie Hastings Council.
Minister for Regional NSW Tara Moriarty said it’s exciting that even more people will be able to enjoy the iconic destination.
“This is a stunning part of regional NSW, and I’m thrilled that even more residents and visitors to the region will get to take in the spectacular views,” Minister Moriarty said.
“Making our tourist attractions accessible for all boosts community participation and visitation numbers and is at the heart of inclusivity.”
Port Macquarie Hastings Mayor Adam Roberts said the upgrades will provide safer and more inclusive infrastructure for the community.
“Today ushers in a new chapter for Tacking Point Lighthouse, home to one of the greatest whale watching spots on the NSW coastline,” Port Macquarie Hastings Mayor Adam Roberts said.
“I want to thank the NSW Government and Council for its investment in this project and for providing safe, accessible and inclusive infrastructure that meets the diverse needs of both our local community and visiting tourists.”
Key components of the upgrade include a fibre reinforced composite walkway, complete with accessible handrails and safety fencing, additional disabled parking, whale watching lookouts and artistic pieces designed by local artists Rachel Cross and Tarran Marr-Harris. The platform at the base of the lighthouse is made from concrete and includes hardwood and sandstone bench seating.
Detailed consideration has been given to the strategic positioning of the boardwalk, viewing platforms, and placement of the furniture to best align with the natural environment of the location.
Member for Port Macquarie, Leslie Williams said, the new all accessible walkway and platform, funded by the former Liberal and ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾s Government through the NSW Government’s Regional Tourism Activation Fund, will allow even more people to view the historic landmark and Lighthouse which was built in 1879.
“Interestingly early explorer Matthew Flinders first wrote about the area in 1802 whilst sailing past. He described the location as “the point from which we tacked,” from then on it was known as Tacking Point,” she said.
Tacking Point Lighthouse is owned by Crown Lands (Crown Lands Department of Planning, Industry and Environment) and managed by PMHC. The Lighthouse itself still functions as a maritime navigation aid and is managed by the Transport for NSW Maritime Infrastructure Delivery Office.
