Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery announced today that the State Government has signed a $1 million agreement with Shell Australia to deliver state-of-the-art training equipment to get trainees job ready.
South Metropolitan TAFE (SMT) has been delivering training to employees of the Shell-operated Prelude FLNG Joint Venture for several years at its Munster process plant facility, the Australian Centre for Energy and Process Training.
The new boiler training equipment will enable SMT to deliver hands-on training in steam and power generation.
The addition of the steam electrical generator trainer is a core part of finalising the equipment at the processing plant training facilities.
This training is not only applicable to accreditation and high-risk tickets in the oil and gas sector, it also has applications across other industries including manufacturing, maritime and defence training.
The boiler training plant will be fitted with wireless instrumentation devices, in partnership with Emerson, which will allow the plant to be integrated into SMT’s autonomous training platform, allowing an additional 350 automation students a year to train on this facility.
The boiler training plant will also be used in the TAFE’s remote operations, automation, and robotics training programs.
The system also uses the latest technology in water quality and treatment processes so students can gain the necessary, current qualifications required by numerous industries.
The equipment is expected to be purchased, installed and ready for students in the next 12 to 18 months.

“I am pleased Shell and its Prelude FLNG partners have recognised the quality of our training sector by supporting equipment that can be used for accreditation in sectors beyond oil and gas, including hospitals, power generation and maritime training.”
