Take time to prepare for fire season

Spring is the ideal time to remind residents how important it is to clean up around their properties, prepare for summer and help reduce the risk of bushfires this season.

There are a number of ways to clean up around your home to ensure your property is prepared:

  • Cut grass and keep it under 75mm in height
  • Rake up and remove dry grass, leaves, twigs and loose bark (also called fine fuels)
  • Remove any rubbish or material that is likely to cause, maintain or promote a fire
  • Store flammable liquids well away from the house
  • Keep gutters clean and free of fine fuels
  • Store woodpiles away from the house
  • Clear away noxious weeds, such as gorse and blackberry
  • Store LPG cylinders securely in an upright position and face LPG cylinder vent-pipes away from the house.
  • Plan and prepare a bushfire survival plan for your property, family and pets.

Acting Manager Community Safety, Allie Jalbert said there are many benefits in residents undertaking a few simple preparation measures now.

“Preparing your property for the fire season is something that all residents need to do each and every year,” Ms Jalbert said.

“From raking up fine fuels to preparing a bushfire survival plan, these actions can make a significant difference to the safety of you and your property.”
