Talks explore future of Hobart after COVID-19

The future of Hobart after COVID-19 is up for debate 16 September 2020 at the first in a series of webinars and public talks called CityTalks.

Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds is among the speakers for the opening CityTalks event, called Street Smart, which is exploring how cities are reshaping their streets in response to COVID-19.

The CityTalks event series is a partnership between the City of Hobart and the University of Tasmania which aims to inspire ideas and innovation for Hobart’s future.

“Street Smart, our first virtual conversation, is looking at examples of small cities around the world doing great things in response to the COVID-19 pandemic,” Cr Reynolds said.

“Communities have become more familiar with our city streets and public spaces during the pandemic, including walking, cycling and just spending more time in the local area.

“As we look to the future, it makes sense we take time to learn from global examples of small cities taking innovative steps to create safer, people-focused streets.”

The Street Smart session includes insights from Skye Duncan, Director of the Global Designing Cities Initiative at the ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO).

Author of , Ms Duncan is providing global examples of small cities creating spaces which foster community and support small business and the local economy.

Other speakers are Stacey Pennicott, Chief Member Experience Officer, RACT; and Professor Jason Byrne, Human Geography and Planning, University of Tasmania.

City of Hobart has partnered with the University of Tasmania for the conversation series which features community leaders as well as international and national speakers.

Each discussion in the series is open to the public and involves a panel discussion as well as questions from the audience about the future of our city.
