Tamworth’s BMX community can rejoice as the remediation and upgrades to the Marius Street BMX track are now complete.
Closed in March 2020 after non-friable asbestos containing material was found at the track, the site has been carefully remediated to ensure the safest possible result for BMX riders and the community.
As part of the works, the track has been upgraded to state and national competition level thanks to funding secured under the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program.
Tamworth Region Mayor Russell Webb said he was looking forward to seeing this next chapter of the growing sport in the region.
“The BMX community has been patient while remediation works and approvals were undertaken, and I am very excited to see a track of this calibre available for riders and the wider community,” he said.
The new Marius Street BMX track now has an all-weather, high-performance competition surface which will provide invaluable opportunities to local riders. A new pump track has also been constructed next to the existing BMX track, providing a secondary practice and training space for BMX riders of all skills levels.
Tamworth City BMX Club President Dan Morris said club members are excited for this next chapter for the club.
“It’s a really exciting time for BMX in Tamworth to be reopening with such a great new facility! We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has been a part of this process. It has been a long road but we couldn’t be happier with the outcome,” said Mr Morris.
Upgrading the BMX track has been made possible through $867,000 funding through the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure (LRCI) Program. The Tamworth region has already benefited from over $11.3 million in funding from the program. This program supports local councils to deliver priority local road and community infrastructure projects across Australia.
The new pump track received $55,000 in funding through the NSW Government’s Community Building Partnership program, obtained directly by the Tamworth City BMX Club.
