Tāmaki Makaurau can now celebrate its efforts by returning to a more relaxed model of everyday life. Following the Prime Minister’s Monday announcement, Tāmaki Makaurau/Auckland has followed the rest of Aotearoa by moving to level one.
Aucklanders first weekend in level one will coincide with the beginning of the Tangaroa phase. The Maramataki/Māori lunar calendar states this is the time when Papatuanuku and Tangaroa is at its highest fertility. A perfect time to fish, plant and interact with people. It will be a busy weekend out on the water in the Hauraki Gulf as we expect to see more people enjoying the activities that connect them with nature.
The Hauraki Gulf is home to 47 pest free islands and five marine reserves and DOC would like to remind those heading out to be safe and vigilant when planning your activities and to abide by the rules.
New Zealanders love the natural environment and we need to support predator control to protect native taonga that live on the Hauraki Gulf islands and follow the rules when in protected marine reserves.
DOCs Inner Islands Manager Katharine Lane says, “We know you’re keen to get back out on to the water, but before you do, it’s crucial that you check for pests such as rats, mice, ants and skinks to help keep Hauraki Gulf pest free.
“Your boat – whether sitting in the driveway or moored in a marina – may have become a preferred hiding spot for pests. Please make sure that everything is clean, including your gear.”
“If you are planning on enjoying a day out on the water please ensure you know where you are and if you are spending the day in one of our marine reserves to the follow the guidelines.”

Marine reserve guidelines:
- No fishing of any kind.
- Don’t take or kill marine life.
- Don’t remove or disturb any marine life or materials.
- Don’t feed fish – it disturbs their natural behaviour.
- Take care when anchoring to avoid damaging the sea floor.
Visiting a pest free island:
- Check your gear for pests such as rodents and insects
- Clean your footwear and gear, removing soil and seeds
- Seal your gear and ensure that it is zipped up
