Tasmania powers national renewable energy achievement

Will Hodgman,Premier

Guy Barnett,Minister for Energy

The Tasmanian Liberal Government welcomes the announcement Australia will surpass its 2020 large-scale Renewable Energy Target ahead of time, in no small part due to Tasmania’s nation leading development in renewable energy projects.

In a win for Tasmania, the Target was surpassed thanks to the commissioning of the Cattle Hill Wind Farm.

Harnessing our renewable energy potential is one of Tasmania’s largest economic opportunities for the next decade, as we work towards our ambitious goal of being 100 per cent self-sufficient in renewables by 2022.

My Government’s number one priority is to create jobs, grow the economy and protect the Tasmanian way of life, which is why we will continue to back renewable energy projects across the state, with the ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Energy Market screaming for reliable and affordable energy, backed by energy storage.

Coupled with Tasmania’s Battery of the Nation pumped hydro plan, and the second Bass Strait interconnector, there is potential to create thousands of jobs, attract billions of dollars in investment and generate opportunities for hundreds of local businesses to benefit from a major growth sector.

Under the former Labor-Green Government, Tasmanian businesses and residents saw their power price increase 65 per cent over seven years, despite Tasmania’s capacity to generate of clean, hydro and wind energy.

Renewable energy is one of our greatest advantages and while other states are struggling with double-digit price increases and blackouts, we are working hard to ensure Tasmania has a ready supply of low cost, reliable clean energy.
