The Hodgman majority Liberal Government is committed to strengthening Tasmania’s biosecurity systems to protect our primary industries, environment, community and the tourism sector.
Tasmania’s reputation as a premium producer of agricultural and seafood products, and as a leading tourism destination, is reliant on a rigorous and effective biosecurity system.
Tasmania’s new landmark Biosecurity Act (2019), replaces seven current Acts with a single streamlined modern statute that is “fit-for-purpose”.
One of the key tasks is the establishment of the new Biosecurity Advisory Committee (BAC), an independent advisory body, which will play a role in guiding Government strategies and policy in respect to biosecurity, working with industry and providing advice to the Minister for Primary Industries and Water.
Recognising good biosecurity relies on community, industry and government working together, Expressions of Interest are being sought for the position of Chairperson and Members for the new Committee.
Membership of the Committee will comprise a mix of skills and representatives from a number of industry sectors, including: fisheries; animal-and plant based agricultural industries; aquaculture; tourism; and environmental organisations.
