Tasmania’s building and construction boom

Elise Archer,Minister for Building and Construction

The Hodgman majority Liberal Government is a strong supporter of our building and construction sector, and we are committed to maintaining the momentum and investing for further growth, to create more jobs across the industry.

Tasmania’s building and construction sector continues to lead the nation as indicated by June 2019 quarter data released today by the ABS.

As at the June 2019 quarter, Tasmania’s building sector was the only one to see activity growth over the year, with all other jurisdictions seeing a decrease in total building work done, in real trend terms. In the 2018-19 financial year, nearly $1.7 billion in total building work was completed, 15.9 per cent more than the previous year.

As part of this, Tasmania was the fastest growing state for residential building work done, with nearly $970 million in 2018-19, an increase of 18.3 per cent compared to the previous year, and contributing to increasing housing supply across Tasmania.

At the same time, work done by Tasmania’s engineering construction sector grew 5.3 per cent in the June 2019 quarter compared to the June 2018 quarter, with Tasmania being the only jurisdiction to see engineering construction growth in real trend terms, bucking the national trend.

These strong results confirm that the Government’s plan is working to build more houses and maintain the momentum we are seeing in our building and construction sectors.

Under the Hodgman majority Liberal Government, 13,000 jobs have been created, and the 2019-20 Budget’s record-breaking $3.6 billion investment in intergenerational infrastructure contributes to the creation of a further 10,000 jobs over the budget period.

We will continue to put in place the right conditions to support the sector and ensure these great outcomes continue.
