Data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics today shows that the Tasmanian Liberal Government’s long-term plan to do what matters is working.
Premier, Jeremy Rockliff, welcomed the strong employment numbers, with 288,000 Tasmanians enjoying the security of a job, which is nearly 53,000 more people in work since the Liberal Government was elected in 2014. Of this increase, more than half were women and more than half were full-time jobs.
“Our long-term plan to keep our economy strong and create jobs has Tasmania well placed to face the current national economic headwinds, retain our record low unemployment rate and ensure that businesses continue to have the confidence to employ more people,” the Premier said.
“Tasmania’s unemployment rate remains steady at the record low of 3.9 per cent, around half of what it was at the peak of the Labor-Green recession.
“These results are no accident, they are the result of our careful, considered long-term plan to make Tasmania the best place to live, work and raise a family.”
Treasurer, Michael Ferguson, said the contrast between the Rockliff Liberal Government and the shambolic Labor opposition could not be more stark.
“While the Liberals are growing the economy and creating jobs, Tasmanian Labor is obsessed with talking Tasmania into a recession that will only ever happen under their watch,” the Treasurer said.
“Just this week, Rebecca White and her shadows are openly calling for major capital upgrades to be scrapped and less investment in infrastructure.
“It’s clear that under Rebecca White there would be less investment and fewer jobs, taking us back to the economic disaster that was the Labor-Green accord.
“Our government is getting on with the job of growing our economy, building confidence and delivering the biggest infrastructure agenda in Tasmania’s history that secures jobs for years to come.
“It’s only a strong economy that enables Tasmanians to put a roof over their head, put food on the table and pay their bills.
“You won’t be able to do that under a Labor Green Government.”
