TasNetworks must not exploit
coronavirus crisis to end long running negotiations

Now is not the time for uncertainty
over energy security
Labor Shadow Minister for Energy, David O’Byrne,
today called on TasNetworks to return to good faith negotiations with its
workforce after they withdrew from the Fair Work Commission process they
established.
Mr O’Byrne said energy workers were performing an
essential service and they deserved to be treated with respect by their
employer.
“Right now we need these workers on the frontline to
ensure that energy security is protected,” Mr O’Byrne.
“Just today the Premier acknowledged that we need
these workers to keep the power on in our homes.
“Instead they are being forced into a bitter and
protracted fight to protect their wages and conditions.
“TasNetworks should end their aggressive tactics and
ensure there is no ballot until after the coronavirus threat passes.
“The
cynical and opportunistic approach taken by TasNetworks is not how we want our
Government owned enterprises to conduct themselves.
“Energy Minister Guy Barnett cannot wash his hands of this issue. He must step in to mediate this dispute and send a strong message that our energy workers are valued and supported.”
