A teenage boy has been charged over an alleged crash which left a man seriously injured at Maitland yesterday.
About 6.15am (Tuesday 5 November 2024), emergency services were called to The Long Bridge on High Street, Maitland, after a white Toyota Hilux utility and a motorcycle collided.
The rider – a 58-year-old man – was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being airlifted to the John Hunter Hospital in a serious condition.
Officers attached to Port Stephens-Hunter Police District arrested the alleged driver of the utility – a 16-year-old boy – near the scene.
He was taken to hospital under police guard for medical treatment and mandatory testing.
A crime scene was established and officers from the Crash Investigation Unit (CIU) commenced an investigation into the incident.
About 8.45am today (Wednesday 6 November 2024), officers attended the hospital where they charged the boy with two counts of negligent driving, take and drive conveyance without consent of owner, never licensed person drive vehicle on road, drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous, dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, cause bodily harm by misconduct, in charge of motor vehicle, and fail to stop and assist after vehicle impact causing grievous bodily harm.
He was refused bail to appear before a children’s court via a bedside hearing today (Wednesday 6 November 2024).
