Work to construct a 2m wide temporary asphalt footpath along the western foreshore of Sandringham Bay between Vanston Parade and Ida Street will begin this week, to provide a safe path for pedestrian and cyclists until the new path is built.
In 2020 Council reconstructed part of this pathway with a 5m wide by 250m long section between Sanoni Avenue and the Primrose Avenue Walkway.
This year plans to extend and widen another 450m long section from the Walkway to Vanston Parade were delayed due to the beach erosion in Sandringham Bay.
Storm and tidal action has washed away sand protecting the base of the seawall leaving it exposed and causing sections of this popular pathway to collapse.
Council is working to address the ongoing problems with the seawall due to erosion and has commissioned a study to examine the issues.
Council will carefully assess its options before undertaking the construction of a new pathway.
In the interim the temporary asphalt path will be constructed away from the seawall to provide a safe passage for both pedestrians and cyclists.
The seawall in Sandringham Bay was built in the 1930s and was part of a much larger project to construct a 4km long seawall between Sandringham Bay and Brighton.
