To enable safe construction of the new Great Eastern Highway Bypass (the Bypass) and Abernethy Road Interchange, a temporary roundabout will be constructed to the east of Abernethy Road. See attached for .
Temporary traffic lanes will also be constructed in the central median of the Bypass between the Midland Freight Rail Bridge and Stirling Crescent.
The temporary roundabout and traffic lanes will allow removal of the existing traffic lights at the intersection of the Bypass and Abernethy Road and enable traffic to continue to flow between Abernethy Road and the Bypass and along the Bypass while the new interchange is constructed.
The roundabout and temporary traffic lanes will be ready for traffic in April 2022 and will remain in operation for approximately two years.
Temporary roundabout construction works will include:
• Installation of safety barriers to separate traffic from work areas.
Traffic management
Signage will be in place to alert motorists to any changed traffic conditions and reduced speed limits. Drivers are asked to be aware of the changed environment and follow the relevant signage. This will ensure the safety of road users and project personnel undertaking their work.
Timing
Construction of the temporary roundabout and traffic lanes is scheduled to start mid-November continuing until 22 December 2021, with a break over Christmas to then recommence on 10 January.
To minimise the impact of the works on road users, some activities will be undertaken at night and on weekends when traffic volumes are low. Overnight and weekend works will take place intermittently as required. Nearby residents and businesses will be notified prior to any scheduled overnight works.
Following completion of these works, traffic will be moved onto the new temporary road alignment.
