Temporary traffic measures in north Torquay

Traffic measures will be in place within the Quay and Quay 2 estates in the north of Torquay, until the completion of an intersection at Surf Coast Highway, Coombes Road and Rosser Boulevard.

Starting from 13 July 2020, Surf Coast Shire Council will close the following roads at the junction of the Quay and Quay 2 developments: Glengarry Drive, Inshore Drive, Marine Drive, and Centreside Drive. The temporary traffic measures will help avoid an unreasonable increase in traffic volumes on local roads connecting these estates. No footpaths will be closed, with pedestrians and cyclists to maintain access.

Cr Brian McKiterick said the measures would temporarily re-create traffic conditions for residents in the original Quay development that were in place before the Quay 2 development started. The objective is to avoid impacts in those local streets that connect the two estates while the intersection is completed.

“The traffic measures within the estates will be in place until the intersection is activated, which is expected to be late 2021,” Cr McKiterick said.

“While these temporary measures are in place, Quay 2 residents and construction traffic will continue to access their estate through roads leading to and from Merrijig Drive. Motorists in the north of Torquay might notice a minor increase in traffic on Merrijig Drive , which we know is a well-used route, but Council feels it is important to ensure existing Quay residents aren’t impacted while the new intersection is under construction” Cr McKiterick said.

“Council and Regional Roads Victoria are working with the developer, to progress the intersection project as quickly as possible. It’s going to be an important intersection, enabling the majority of Quay 2 residents to access their estate via a major road rather than residential streets.”

“We know that traffic changes like this can be inconvenient for some people, so we thank locals for their patience,” Cr McKiterick said.

“Council has sent a letter to impacted landowners, and is in the process of informing impacted renters in the estate. If people do have concerns, I encourage them to Lodge a Request with Council so these concerns can be worked through.”
