Victoria’s peak body for renters, Tenants Victoria, has welcomed the $500 million rental relief package announced this morning by Premier Daniel Andrews.
Tenants Victoria CEO, Jennifer Beveridge said ‘The Victorian Government has recognised that renters – who make up a third of the state’s households – are doing it very tough during the coronavirus health crisis that has upended so many aspects of our lives.’
‘The land tax relief on offer will provide a good incentive for landlords to enter into mediation with renters and the moratorium on evictions and rent increases is urgently needed.’
‘Tenants Victoria especially welcomes the $80 million identified to provide relief for renters who are in rental stress – defined as paying 30 per cent or more of their income in rental payments.’
‘Every day of this crisis we are hearing stories of distress, including in one share house where three of the four renters have lost their jobs. This issue has particularly impacted on young people and families who just don’t have the savings to get them through this period.’
‘While we are examining the full details of the package, I congratulate Premier Andrews, Minister Kairouz and their colleagues for responding to the real need in our community with this well crafted package.’
