Tender advertised for Council Chambers rebuild

The tender to fix and upgrade the flood-damaged Byron Shire Council Chambers is currently open and Council is hoping work will start in May/June.

Like many buildings in Mullumbimby, the Council Chambers was badly damaged by flood water, rain, and mould in February/March last year.

When insurance assessors examined the building, it was discovered that there was also significant white ant damage.

With major work needed, Council decided to take the opportunity to make changes so the building allows improved accessibility for all residents and people using the Chambers.

“It has been a long process that has involved the insurance company as well as building engineering and architectural input and finally we have approval for the rebuild of the Chambers to proceed,” Esmeralda Davis, Director Corporate and Community Services, said.

“I acknowledge that it is 12 months since the floods and the lack of access to the Chambers has been frustrating for Councillors, staff and of course, the community,” she said.

Last year Council’s Conference Room was reconfigured, and improved technology installed to accommodate Council meetings.

“Because of the size of the room the number of community members able to attend the meetings in person has been limited, and some our residents have missed being able to personally connect with their Councillors,” Ms Davis said.

“Council meetings are livestreamed via Facebook and our website, but we recognise that some people are missing the opportunity to sit in on our meetings which are often colourful and vibrant, reflecting our community.

“We are hoping that work on the Chambers will be finished in August, but this is dependent on the tender and process and availability of contractors and materials,” Ms Davis said.

Council has looked at other options for meetings, including rotating through community halls but availability and the technology required has made this prohibitive.
